Factors That Are Likely To Invite Termites Into Your Home

Blog

No one ever wants to have a termite infestation in their home. These little pests can cause grave damage by literally eating your home, thereby making it unsafe and lowering its value. However, you may be condoning some things in your house that could be encouraging termites to move in. Read on to find out what these 'termite baits' are and how to avoid them.

High moisture levels in your basement

In many cases, termites will get into your home from underground through the basement. This is because they can easily creep through the soil from the underground of your compound. However, they can only do so if the conditions there are favorable for them. Moisture happens to be one key 'termite bait'. If your home has dampness or moisture, termites will try to get in, whether or not there's timber inside. Once they do, they may migrate to other parts of the house. If your basement is damp, invest in a dehumidifier or install vents. If you have rising damp, seek damp proofing services.

Timber stumps under the subfloor

If your home has a subfloor, stumps make a great entry route into your home. Older homes have timber stumps, which over time can rot and attract termites. Once there, the termites will easily move to your subfloor or into your crawlspace. To avoid this, ensure your stumps and subfloors are occasionally treated by a termite control technician. Alternatively, you can seek to replace your old timber stumps with concrete ones and reduce the risk of an infestation.

Cracks on your walls or floor

Cracks are another way termites get into home. Cracks or gaps in the floor or in the walls close to the ground are especially susceptible. No matter how small they are, there is always the chance that termites can get through. To deter this, have a termite control technician seal the affected areas. They will also look for any other gaps you may not have seen around your walls, especially in the basement.

Timber lying around your compound

Another easy bait for termites is any timber lying on your compound. This could be firewood, old construction timber heaped near the garage or even dead tree stumps. Any wood in your compound and on the ground can attract termites. Once there, the termites can easily make their way into your house. If you have such wood, get rid of it or store it far from your house. Alternatively, have it treated and store it in a dry room.

Since it's hard to keep an eye on every inch of your home, complement your efforts by seeking an inspection from a termite control specialist like Ranger Pest Control once or twice a year. Termite control technicians can detect 'bait' factors and termite-prone areas better that you can, and will therefore greatly contribute to keeping your home safe.
