When summer is on the horizon, you are likely excited about the warmer temperatures, having time off work or school, and enjoying more time with your family. Unfortunately, a variety of different pests are also fans of summer, including ants, spiders, fleas, and mosquitoes. Here are tips for controlling these pests when summer arrives.
Seal All Entrances
One of the first things you should do when you want to control pests is to prevent them from gaining entrance into your home. Start by checking all windows and doors in the home. Look for potential holes, cracks or gaps and fill them. For cracks and holes, you may need to get caulk to fill them in or even have a contractor make repairs for you. Weatherstripping can also be used around exterior windows and doors to help provide better sealant around them. Also check that there aren't cracks in the attic and roof, basement, and HVAC system. Check the window screens and door screens to see if there are any rips or tears. If so, repair them or replace them.
Keep the Home Clean
Insects and pests will go directly for the nearest food source, so try to keep the inside of your home as clean as possible at all times. Wash dishes as soon as they are in the sink, instead of letting them sit there. Clean up spills on the countertops, table and floors right away. Make sure all food on the counter and in cupboards is sealed tightly. If you have sugar, you are better off transferring it to a plastic container with a lid, instead of keeping it in an opened bag. The same goes for other dry foods in the cupboards.
Reduce Standing Water
In addition to cleaning up food and drinks, you should also never let standing water sit. This attracts many pests, including mosquitoes and ants that are looking for sustenance. If you have any plumbing fixtures in your home that tend to leak, get them fixed right away. After a bath or shower, make sure the floor is completely dry, and hang up towels instead of leaving them on the floor. Clean out your gutters so no water from a recent rain sits in them. Have a pump in your pool that circulates water, as this reduces pests. Be careful around bird baths, as they could attract pests as well.
Keep the Home Well-Ventilated
Since many pests are drawn to water and moisture in the home, you need to keep the inside of your home as dry as possible. You can do this by increasing your ventilation, particularly in areas like the basement, attic and crawl spaces. These areas tend to have more moisture and humidity, which can attract a lot of different pests. Vents, window ventilation, whole-house fans and dehumidifiers can all help.
