Termite Treatment | 3 Ways To Look For Signs Of Termites In Your Home's Wood

Blog

Termites are wood-destroying insects, so it's natural for them to make a beeline for all your wooden furniture if they are present in your home. While termite treatment is necessary once you notice termites, knowing how to look for the signs in the first place requires some thought. This guide is designed to help you look for signs of termites in your home's wood.

Look For Evidence Of Shelter Tubes Or Mud Tunnels

Keep in mind that termites create evidence when they are present in your wood, so look for accommodated termites through shelter tubes or mud tunnels. These shelter tubes are usually made up of their faeces, saliva and outside soil. Mud tunnels are long and thin tubes that resemble the look and size of a pen or pencil. They connect the nest of the termites to wooden food sources. Look for signs of these termites in terraces, patio floors, porches, furniture and other wooden sources in your home. When they get old, you may notice them drying and crumbling. If you notice evidence of shelter tubes, be sure to get termite inspections and termite treatment immediately to control the problem before it turns into a major catastrophe.

Look For Cracked Paint On Wooden Surfaces

If you have painted wooden surfaces, it's common to think that chipping and cracked paint is simply a sign of age and regular wear. While this is true, keep in mind that there could be a possible termite infestation inside the cracks. Termites use these cracks and chips as part of their tunnel system, so you will need to get termite treatment immediately to get rid of them. Once the pest control service gets rid of the termites, you must seal these cracks and chips to prevent further infestation.

Check Internal Subfloors

Termites are most commonly found at ground levels, so you should look for signs of them on your subfloors. A subfloor typically creates a good foundation and is attached to top layer flooring materials like carpet, hardwood and tile. When termites damage the subfloor, it will affect structural integrity and will cause your floor to sag. Since a damaged subfloor sags, the top layer flooring of hardwood or tile will loosen from the subfloor. You will need to get termite treatment immediately to ensure that no further damage is caused to your home's flooring.

Keep in mind that apart from termite treatment, you may also need to undertake bird control because they can carry fleas, lice and termites into your home. A pest control service will also inspect for bed bugs and other insects that can destroy your home.
