Three Chemical-Free Ways to Say Goodbye to Your Rodent Problem

Blog

It is getting colder, and that means all the pesky creatures you don't like are looking for a warm hiding spot for the winter. If you have heard scurrying in your walls or in your roof tresses, there is a good chance a rat or two have claimed your home as their own. As someone with a sensitivity to chemicals, though, you want to banish rats from your residence naturally, so what choices do you have?

Cage Traps

While rat traps in the past seemed a little inhumane due to the metal bar landing on the rats' midsections or necks, there are nicer options available to you now. Talk to your pest controller about the traps that look similar to cages.

With these devices, rats are lured into the cage with bait. Once they are inside, they cannot escape again. You don't even have to use chemical-laced pellets to lure them into the cage, as there are now chemical-free rodent baits available for purchase. These are made of ingredients such as maize and molasses. Once a rat has been trapped in the cage, you can let the pest controller know so they can take it away for disposal.

Electric Traps

Electric traps are another type that can be used to stop a rat in its tracks without a chemical presence. Electric traps can be placed strategically around the home and filled with bait, and when the rat heads inside to have a look, it receives an electric shock that will kill it quickly.

Electric traps run on normal household batteries, so there are no messy cords snaking the floor. However, the electric shock does deliver a jolt, so it is not the wisest choice for open areas where little human hands or furry canine paws might be tempted to poke around to see what is inside the trap.

Snake or Cat Pet

Provided you don't have a fear of snakes, a pet python helps to keep the rodent population at bay. In fact, a Townsville resident recently found that his python was the perfect solution to a pigeon problem in his area. If a snake seems a little too extreme for your tastes, consider adding a cat to the family, as they are a rat's natural enemy.

Your pest controller can help you eradicate your rodent problem, and he or she can also help you to discover how they are getting into the home so you don't have a repeat experience later in the season. The faster you get on the phone to pest control, the less time you have to listen to things that go scurrying in your walls at night.
