Protecting Your Home Against Termite Infestation

Blog

Apparently, termites have existed on Earth for over 250 million years. Given that their diet consists solely of wood, and that there are over 3,000 species of termite around the world, they must have eaten their way through billions of trees in that time. Unfortunately, termites eat anything as long as it consists of wood. That includes live trees, furniture, firewood, and (most distressingly of all) your house.

A study at the University of Sydney found that termites cause $1 billion worth of damage throughout Australia each year, and attack 1 in every 5 homes. That means no home is ever truly safe from these wood-eating pests. Prevention is always a much less costly option than cure, especially when your home is at risk.

Drain Water Away from the House

Make sure all rainwater is effectively pushed away from your property via extended downspouts, and remove dead leaves and debris from gutters and drains.

Fix Leaks both Inside and Out

No matter where the leak is, get it fixed. Water leaking into the soil below and around your property will attract termites.

Keep Basement and Crawl Spaces Dry

Keep basements and crawl spaces dry and well-ventilated by allowing the air to flow through them easily. Install dehumidifiers as an extra precaution.

Store Wood Away From the House

Store your firewood away from the house, preferably on a raised platform that doesn't make contact with the soil, as termites underground will locate and infest it otherwise. Any wood leaning against the house will serve as an entry point.

Cover Crawl Spaces

Cover as much of the soil in your crawl space as you can with plastic sheeting.

Inspect Future Property Investments for Termites

Before purchasing a property in future, always invest in a pest-inspection report. Building inspections do not cover pests, and will not inform you of termite infestation. The average cost of repairs for termite damage to a house is $7000, and sometimes much more.

Termites need wood, shelter and water for a successful infestation to occur. Your best chance of avoiding a termite problem then, is to deprive them of these things. Your biggest disadvantage when trying to keep termites at bay is that they work unseen. They often build nests under paving slabs in yards. Make sure there is no concrete-to-foundation connection around your house as this will serve as an ideal entry point.
