Handy Tips to Preventing an Ant Infestation

Blog

One of the most resilient pests that homeowners have to contend with is ants. This is especially true during the warmer months when they come out to forage in high numbers. However, you do not have to wait to be faced with an ant infestation before you seek measures for ant control. Instead, you should try to prevent the infestation in the first place. The following are some of the handy tips that you could use to prevent an ant infestation in your home.

Keep all possible entry points sealed

Since ants are so small, they are at an advantage when it comes to finding access points into your home. To be proactive in the prevention of an ant infestation, you would have to ensure that any entry points are sealed. Some of the most common access points that these pests will use to gain entry into your home include gaps in your windows, gaps under doors, cracks in between tiles and crevices in your walls. If you spot any gaps, cracks and crevices, you should seal them using a silicon sealant.

Keep your home clean

Ants are foraging critters. As such, they will try to gain access into your home if they are following food. The first thing you should do is ensure that any garbage left outdoors is sealed tightly; otherwise, the ants will be attracted to the disposed food. In addition to this, you should ensure that any spills and crumbs are wiped away in your home as soon as they occur. This is especially prudent with sugary substances such as juices and desserts as ants will be attracted to the sugar. Lastly, if you are hosting guests and have some food that you have left out for people to conveniently self –serve, ensure that it is covered. Ants can easily make their way into the food containers and find their way into your home when you carry these containers indoors.

Keep natural ant repellents at hand

When some homeowners consider ant repellants, they assume that they have to be chemical based. The truth is there is a host of natural ant repellents that you have in your home in the form of condiments. Ants are repulsed by condiments such as chilli powder, black pepper and cinnamon. If you would like to deter them from making their way into your cupboards and draws, you could lightly sprinkle these condiments inside these spaces. Plants such as mint and cloves can also be planted on windowsills to deter these pests.
