Why Every Homeowner Needs to Know About Pest Control

Blog

Pest control is very important for any home, as many types of rodents or insects that might infest your home can cause damage to the home's framework and building materials. Pests also bring germs and bacteria into the home, and might even carry certain diseases that are dangerous to you and to your family, and even to your pets. If you own a home, note a few factors to keep in mind about pest control, and be sure to discuss any signs of a pest infestation in your home with a professional to protect your home and your family.

Termites aren't the only pests to cause wood damage

Termites aren't the only insects that cause wood damage; carpenter ants and certain types of beetles are considered wood-eating insects, and these can eat through the wood framework of a home or through the drywall, doorframes, window frames, subfloor, and other such materials. Don't wait until you find termite wings or signs of a termite tunnel outside your home to have the structure inspected, but consider an annual inspection of all the wood in the home, to check for any type of insect that might be causing damage.

You don't need to see mice to have mice in the home

As with wood-eating insects, it's a mistake to assume that you should wait until you see certain signs of a mouse infestation to have the home inspected and fumigated for rodents. Mice prefer dark areas, away from people, and often enter a kitchen or other such area when it's unoccupied and quiet. Note, too, that you might not see droppings and other such signs of mice, even if they come into your kitchen or pantry, as they may be nesting outside the home. This is also why it's good to have a home inspected annually or as often as needed, to ensure any potential infestation is addressed.

Any home can be infested

A new or well-built home might be less prone to a pest infestation, but note that pests are attracted to moisture and to a food source, which they can find in just about any home, no matter its age or condition. If you leave open food in the pantry, have trapped humidity in the attic, or pile firewood next to the house, you are putting your home at risk of an infestation. Have a home inspector perform a property inspection for pests and for risks of an infestation, to keep it safe from damage.
